Israel’s Worst Enemy Has Become Israel Itself
I am going to say something that disturbs many people, but sometimes we must have the courage to call things by their name.
Israel’s worst enemy today is neither Iran, nor Hamas, nor the Palestinians.
Israel’s worst enemy has become Israel itself.
Why?
Because a state built upon the idea of ethnic, religious, or civilizational superiority always ends up crossing the limits of humanity.
History has already shown us this.
All religions and all forms of extreme nationalism have produced massacres when they transformed themselves into absolute political power:
the religious wars in Europe, the Inquisition, colonization, fascism, Nazism…
No people are immune from this drift.
After the absolute horror of the Holocaust, the West wanted to repair the unforgivable suffering inflicted upon the Jews of Europe.
But instead of building a truly universal and democratic solution, it supported in 1948 the creation of a state founded upon a religious and ethnic identity on land already inhabited and claimed by another people.
Since then, the region has lived in almost permanent war.
Colonization.
Occupation.
Humiliation.
Attacks.
Repression.
Mutual radicalization.
And today, under Netanyahu and the religious far right, Israel seems to have crossed a historical and moral threshold.
The images coming from Gaza now shock a huge part of humanity:
mass destruction,
crushed civilians,
mutilated children,
famine,
the permanent dehumanization of Palestinians.
Many people around the world now feel they are witnessing a power reproducing mechanisms reminiscent of the darkest regimes in history:
permanent fear,
identity superiority,
collective punishment,
and the vision of others as inferior or interchangeable human beings.
And that is precisely the tragedy:
by constantly trying to impose domination through force,
Israel is destroying its own historical and moral legitimacy.
The world is gradually beginning to turn away from the Israeli state as it currently functions.
.Meanwhile, Western leaders continue mechanically repeating the formula of the “two-state solution,” even though everyone can see that this solution becomes more unrealistic every year because of the continuing colonization of Palestinian territories.
So what solution remains?
For my part, I have long believed that one day we will have to move beyond ethnic and religious logic in order to build:
one secular, binational and democratic state
A state where:
* Jews,
* Palestinians,
* Muslims,
* Christians,
* atheists,
* believers and non-believers
would have exactly the same civil and political rights.
A state that would protect all citizens regardless of their origin or faith.
Not a religious state.
Not a state of domination.
Not an apartheid system.
Not revenge.
But a common democratic republic.
A single state does not mean expulsion or revenge.
No Palestinian.
No Israeli.
should be killed or displaced.
The solution is not the domination of one people over another,
but full equality of rights within a common secular and democratic state.
This idea was once considered completely taboo.
Today, more and more voices finally dare to open this debate.
And credit must be given to Rima Hassan for the political courage of publicly bringing this perspective back into the international debate despite immediate attacks and accusations of antisemitism.
Personally, I sometimes symbolically use the name:
ISPALIA
IS = Israel
PAL = Palestine
IA = a future where human intelligence… and perhaps also artificial intelligence… could finally help peoples escape the logic of hatred and permanent war.
A new state.
.A new flag.
.A new Constitution.
Complete equality among all citizens.
Because peace will never come from the eternal domination of one people over another.
Peace will come only through:
* equality,
* secularism,
* democracy,
* and the mutual recognition of each other’s humanity.
And perhaps that is the hardest truth to hear:
by continuing on its current path,
Israel risks bringing about the disappearance of the political model it wanted to preserve.
Israel’s worst enemy has become Israel itself.
